I read "The Scarlet Idis" by James Hurst. From the very start of this short story it really makes you think. It paint a crazy picture in your head because of all the vivid Details. "The Scarlet Ibis" is about a boy telling the story of his brother named Doddle. Doddle was a very unique boy. Everyone in the town in which he was born thought that he was not going to live for very long. The Parents were so sure that he was going to die that they even made him a mahogany coffin. When he was 3 months old and he had still not died. They decided that they should name him and they named him William Armstrong. Doddle's brother was ashamed to have a brother like him so he decided he would teach him to walk, fight, swing, and climb. At some points he would push him so hard that he would collapse on the ground but eventually he was successful. Then one peaceful day they were eating dinner and they heard a weird sound. They went out to see what it was and they saw a great, big red bird in the tree. It fell to the ground and died. They later found out that it was a Scarlet Idis and their crazy aunt said "Dead Birds is bad luck, Specialty red Dead birds." When she said that it made me feel superstitious, like some thing bad was going to happen. Later that day Doddle and his brother went out to the swamp trying to beat the clouds so that they could work on his walking. The storm Caught up a lot faster then they thought it would. They were running home and all of the sudden Doddle could not keep up and his brother didn't wait for him. When he could not see doodle he turned around but still could not find him. He went back and he only found his brother cradling his body on the ground. When he got to him he said " Let's go Doddle," But there was no response. He pushed his head back and he fell limply to the ground. He Had blood coming out of his mouth. The author never told us what really happened but i think that is because this is a story for you to decided what happened. My mom and i even had a discussion about how his bleeding out of his moth could have been a sign of a brain aneurysm. This was truly a sad but amazing story. It was sad because he was so ashamed of his brother that he pushed him so hard that he died.It amazed me because it told a life-changing story and the older brother could never forget any of those moments in time.
